Metal thieves pinch Calif. church bell
A staff member at the First United Methodist Church in rural Imperial Valley says the 3-foot brass bell taken from the outdoor foyer Monday night would probably be sold as scrap.
Crystal Reyes told the Imperial Valley Press that the bell had been salvaged from the church after a fire in 1962 and was placed on a cinderblock platform after the church was rebuilt.
She said witnesses saw the pair load the heavy bell into a pickup truck.
Reyes said the bell was probably worth about $3,000, but only if it was sold intact rather than broken up into smaller pieces.
