Man, 86, can be extradited to Hungary
Charles Zentai of Perth was jailed immediately after Magistrate Barbara Lane ruled that he is extraditable, The Australian reported. His attorney said he would appeal the decision.
Zentai allegedly beat Peter Balazs, 18, because the young man was not wearing the yellow star that would have marked him as a Jew and he died of his injuries a few hours later. Gabriel Steiner, one of Zentai's sons, said his father is innocent and was not even in Budapest that day.
Steiner said his father is so frail imprisonment is likely to kill him.
"This is home, he made a commitment to become an Australian citizen 50 years ago and I think Australia needs to make some commitment to him as a citizen as well,'' Steiner said.
During the hearing, prosecutors said Zentai joined the Royal Hungarian Army so he could pursue Jews.
