Poll: Many Clinton backers not switching

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- A growing number of supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., say they will not vote for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for president, a poll indicated.

The poll -- conducted by Opinion Research for CNN and released Friday -- found that only 54 percent of those surveyed said they would not vote for Obama for president. Among registered Democrats, 43 percent said that they would prefer Clinton to be the party's nominee.

In a similar survey in early June, 35 percent of Democrats backed Clinton and 60 percent of Clinton supporters planned to vote for Obama. The number of Democrats backing Obama has also dipped from 59 percent to 54 percent.

The latest poll was done after Clinton and Obama got together in Unity, N.H., for a display of party unity.

CNN polling director Keating Holland said the big question is whether Clinton's supporters will come around and support Obama, instead of staying home on Election Day, or even voting for presumptive Republican nominee John McCain.

"Many voters find it tough to immediately switch allegiances to a candidate that they once opposed, so they find a 'neutral' setting more comfortable for awhile," said Holland.

It really disappointing that this great country can not grow beyond prejudice and hatred. We are considered to be the country where everyone wants to
flock to...but we are small minded, we can not focus on the issues.Race is not the issue. We should be encouraging our children whom ever they might to be the BEST...since is supposed be part of OUR motto. Whomever is the best person for the job that is where all support should go...it is as simple as that. 1865, we are in 2008, unfortunately we still have a lot to learn. It is so sad.

To crone

Yes, give him and all African Americans the 20 acres and a mule that was promised from president Lincoln, with inflation and interest from 1865, that would be a little over 100 grand per African American in America today.

Crone, I differ with you most of the time based on issues.

This time your racist bent came through loud and strong and it is just too much! "Give him a mule and 20 acres and send him on his way" may sound clever and cute to you, but it is extremely offensive to me.

Please stick to the issues.
