Hillary campaign co-chair resigns

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- A co-chair of Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign has resigned after suggesting Republicans might exploit Sen. Barack Obama's admitted drug use.

Clinton, D-N.Y., has apologized for William Shaheen's comments, The New York Times reported.

In an interview this week with The Washington Post, Sheen said the presidential campaign provides "so many opportunities for dirty tricks" by Republicans. He suggested that if Obama is the Democratic presidential nominee Republicans would ask if he had been involved in distributing or selling drugs.

Obama, D-Ill., has acknowledged that as a young man he used both marijuana and cocaine.

"I have made the personal decision that I will step down as the co-chair of the Hillary for President campaign," Shaheen said.

Many politicians from both parties, including former Vice President Al Gore and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have admitted using marijuana, although admitted cocaine use is more unusual.
