Former N.J. Gov. McGreevey owes no alimony

ELIZABETH, N.J. (UPI) -- A judge declared the marriage of former New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey at an end Friday and ruled McGreevey owes his ex-wife no alimony.

Family Court Judge Karen Cassidy ordered McGreevey to pay $1,075 a month in child support, The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., reported. His ex-wife, Dina Matos, had asked for $1,750.

The McGreeveys separated four years ago after the governor, proclaiming "I am a gay American," said he would resign a year before the end of his term.

The nasty divorce proceedings included dueling books. Cassidy said that Matos isn't entitled to a share in McGreevey's earnings from his book, "The Confession."

At one point, the judge urged a settlement, telling the couple they didn't have the resources for a protracted legal fight.

McGreevey lives with a male partner in Plainfield, N.J., and is studying at an Episcopal seminary. The couple share custody of their young daughter, although she spends more time with her mother, The Star-Ledger said.
