Text messages yield murder charges

SULTAN, Wash. (UPI) -- Authorities in Snohomish County, Wash., said incriminating text messages led them to arrest two suspects and charge them with first-degree murder.

Snohomish County Deputy Prosecutor Ed Stemler said Brent Starr and Debra Canady were charged Monday after police found Starr allegedly sent Canady a message reading "it's done" on the day her ex-boyfriend, David Grimm, was killed, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Tuesday.

Police said Grimm, who died after he was stabbed three times and beaten on the head June 26, had continued to share a home with Canady after they broke up despite her calls for him to move out.

Investigators said both of the suspects had denied knowing anything about the slaying but they gave conflicting reports on whether they had contacted one another on the day of Grimm's death. Canady said she had no contact with Starr, while Starr said he had sent his girlfriend a text message to say he loved her.

However, police said they obtained the text from their cell phone provider and discovered Starr's message actually said "it's done," apologized for the room being messy and informing her that he needed to change his pants. Police also said they found Canady sent back a text message asking whether "it" was "quiet" and instructing him to dispose of his clothes if the police come around.
