Bertha, first '08 Atlantic hurricane forms
A report from the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said at 5 a.m., Bertha was 845 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, moving west-northwest at 17 mph. Gusts of up to 90 mph were reported.
Bertha had been moving quickly -- faster than 20 mph -- since forming Thursday. The slowing and fact the system is moving over warmer waters indicate strengthening is likely, forecasters said.
The hurricane center it was too early to predict and possible landfall for Bertha, although the five-day forecast indicated the storm would be turning north well east of the Caribbean or U.S. coasts.
