History of The Chinese Zodiac

Ancient Chinese astronomers classified the five known planets by element: Venus to metal or gold, Jupiter to wood, Mercury to water, Mars to fire, and Saturn to earth. The twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac are also defined by the position of these planets year by year. One's sign in the Chinese Zodiac is defined not by birth date, but by birth year, with each sign occurring in a twelve-year cycle and each element occurring every fifth cycle.

The Chinese Zodiac, like the Western Zodiac, defines character and personality based on characteristics of the animal that governs that year. The element associated with a particular year also denotes a person's character, as well as lucky colors, associated times of year, ruling planet, and the location of a person's chi or life force.
