Extreme alkaline can damage teeth
The study, published in the Journal of Dentistry, found a strong alkaline -- a substance with high pH value -- can destroy parts of the organic content of the tooth and leave tooth enamel more vulnerable.
"Exposure to this substance damaged the surface of the teeth resulting in 'flacked' enamel," study researcher Jorgen Noren of the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden said in a statement. "This type of damage markedly increases the risk of caries and other dental damage."
The study was prompted when occupational injuries to teeth were found in those using an alkaline degreaser with a pH of between 12 and 14 in the car reconditioning process.
