Israeli Muslim gets senior hospital post

JERUSALEM (UPI) -- An Israeli Arab woman was appointed a department head at Israel's Rambam Hospital, becoming the first female Muslim in the country to hold such a position.

A statement released by Rambam Hospital in Haifa Tuesday said Dr. Suheir Assady will head the hospital's nephrology department.

A resident of Nazareth, Assady completed her studies and internship in 1993 at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, and began her residency in the department of internal medicine at Rambam Hospital.

Since, she has held many senior positions in the hospital's dialysis and nephrology departments, and also continues with clinical and research studies.

When asked to comment on her appointment, Assady said she views her work as a lifelong mission, the statement said.
