Tip: Dig and Store Cannas

National Gardening Association
Where winters get below 0 degrees (F), dig and store cannas. After a frost, cut back the tops to 6 inches, dig roots with soil attached, pot them in plastic nursery pots, and store in a 40F basement, occasionally sprinkling with water.

storing cannas

I live in zone 5, Michigan. I started with 5 cannas. Every year they multiply and I give away soooo many every spring. I cut them off after the first frost, dig them out, remove the dirt and store them in the basement in cardboard boxes. I do this to my elephant ears also. Last year I planted 50 and dug up over 300. They are really easy and make a beautiful red and green tropical garden with the elephant ears in the front. Don't be afraid of them in cold zones.
