White to Play and Win

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

From a study by Novikoff.

Solution:

1.e7 Bxe7 [1...Kxe7 2.Bb4+ Ke6 3.Bxf8 f5 4.Bd6] 2.Bh4+ Ke6 3.Nc7+ Kd6 4.Ne8+ Ke6 5.Ng7+ Kd6 6.Nf5+. As you may remember, once White gets the bishop and knight against the lone king, even with a pawn, the game is won for purposes of chess composition. The knight really gets a workout! If White didn’t win the Black bishop, the game would be drawn.
