(Dec. 10, 1824 - Sept. 18, 1905)
George MacDonald was raised in a Calvinist atmosphere, but had many
problems with their belief system. After preaching against
predestination, his job as a minister prove fruitless, and he went on
to writing. He wrote fantasies, but claimed his works were not solely
for children. Although he is rarely heard of today, he inspired many
well-known authors - including C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, and
Madeleine L'Engle. He died in 1905, having led a successful career
and becoming the friend and acquaintance of many great writers of the
time.
