Sir John Barrow, 1st Baronet, was best known for his role as an
English statesman. He was fluent in Chinese, and wrote several
articles concerning the language and literature for the Quarterly
Review. In addition, he wrote longer pieces on China, South Africa,
and his most famous piece, "The Eventful History of the Mutiny and
Piratical Seizure of H.M.S. Bounty: Its Cause and Consequences." He
died suddenly one year after writing his autobiograpy, and a monument
overlooking his hometown was built in his honor.
