(Jan. 1, 1854 - May 7, 1941)
Sir James George Frazer, despite never really being a traveler, was an
expert in mythology and religion, especially that of Greece and Rome.
As an anthropologist, Frazer was the first to study religion
completely objectively, and often wrote on the ties between ancient
myth and modern ritual. His symbolic analysis of the cycle of life,
death, and rebirth has influenced many writers, including T.S. Eliot
and Joseph Campbell. He died in 1941, having spent the last ten years
of his life nearly blind.
