Gaius Julius Caesar was born into the Julian family, which claimed to
trace its roots back to Aeneas, a prince claimed in myth to be the son
of the goddess Venus. He served in the military starting at the age
of 20, and quickly moved up in the ranks. He was proclaimed dictator
for life after winning a civil war against Pompey and the Roman
Senate. However, his centralization of the declining Republic, and
the subsequent weakening of the government, led his friends to form a
plan to assassinate him and save the Republic.
