Jane Austen received a great deal more education than most women of
her time. She began writing at the age of fourteen, and became known
for her mastery of literary form and irony. For the most part, she
lived an uneventful life, never marrying and moving only once at the
end of her life. Her novels were published anonymously, and her first
novel, "Sense and Sensibility," was published only six years before
her death.
