Orphaned shortly after he was born, Edgar Poe was adopted by John Allan of Richmond, VA. After being dismissed from West Point for deliberately disobeying orders, he moved in with his aunt and began writing to support himself. He edited several publications while writing his own poetry and fiction. While his works were not a financial success during his lifetime, they were considered a turning point in American literature.
