Does God Have The Same Bad Thing Happen to Children as the Parents?

By Billy Graham, Tribune Media Services
Q: If something bad happened to one of our parents, does this mean God is going to make it happen to us also? My mom died of breast cancer when she was fairly young, and now I'm afraid the same thing will happen to me. -- Mrs. R.J.

A: I'm sure your doctor would advise you to take steps to guard against this possibility by being examined regularly for this disease, and I certainly urge you to follow his advice. Cancer of any type must be taken very seriously, and you know from personal experience how devastating it can be.

But you shouldn't assume that you will definitely get the same disease that killed your mother, nor should you let these fears consume you. Nor should you assume that God wants to give you cancer -- for He doesn't. We don't always understand why God allows bad things to happen to us or to those we love -- but God is not the source of evil, and we mustn't blame Him when evil things happen to us. The Bible says, "The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble" (Nahum 1:7).

Life isn't always the way we wish it were; sooner or later we'll all face times of suffering or heartache. But the most important truth I can tell you is that God loves you, and no matter what happens to you, you can trust the future into His hands. The Bible says, "The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble" (Psalm 9:9).

This is why the most important step you can take is to turn to Jesus Christ and invite Him to come into your life as your Lord and Savior. When we know Christ, we know our future is secure. Put your faith and trust in Him today -- and every day.

My husband is a colon cancer survivor...12 years now. But when they discovered the cancer, every doctor that I came in contact with told me to make sure our adult children get colonoscopies. They have the risk of getting colon cancer since their Dad had it. Also, my husband has a disease of the thyroid. So, the doctor told us to make sure our children and granddaughter get their thyroid checked. Our granddaughter has more of a risk, as her father has thyroid problems and now with her grandfather...it means she is getting it from two sides. With all of that being said, it does not mean they will definitely get cancer etc...it means they have a little bit bigger risk of getting those health problems.

cancer is also hereditary, so we must watch our health habits, and stay close to God, our creator and healer!diseases are one of the consequences of being mortal, like us, humans. The rest are sin, sufferings and death. The 12 apostles never got sick or ill because they were with Jesus always, and had to fulfill their mission first, after Jesus died.So it goes with us too. When we follow Jesus(pure heart, righteous, doing good works, full of grace(sacraments), holy), our spirits share God's life, and so, our bodies get healed from anything that is not of God-He is perfect, don't get sick, so we stay healthy.God heals those who partake of His body and blood, and holiness.WE are supposed to live the abundant life, if we take Jesus as our shepherd. But God allows diseases, as part of His plan, as we are the ones who asks for it, because of our free will.Like one is liable to develop cancer of the lungs if they smoke heavily, everyday..one develops cancer of the colon, if they always ingest red meat, and no laxative rich foods or high fiber rich foods, etc...If we stay close to God(Prayerful, holy, doing God's will, etc..), there is more hope to be free from sickness, if we PRAY for our healing. It'll be our faith that will heal us, eventually. So, it's not true, that you get what your parents have. With God, He can heal anything!
