Am I Wrong to Be So Scared to Leave College?
By Billy Graham, Tribune Media Services
Q: I'll be heading into my last year of college at the end of the
summer, and I'm already terrified because I don't know what I'll be
doing after I get out. I know you'll tell me to pray about this, and I
do, but I'm still afraid I'll make a wrong decision. Am I doing
something wrong? -- A.McM.
A: No, you aren't necessarily doing anything wrong; in fact, it's right for you to pray about your future and seek God's guidance (as I often say in this column).
But let me ask you a question: How do you think God will answer your prayer? Do you expect Him to suddenly overwhelm you with a feeling that one way is right, and all the others are wrong? He may do this, of course, but God also expects us to do our part when we seek His will. For example, have you honestly looked at yourself and your abilities (perhaps with the help of others)? God gave them to you and wants you to use them for His glory. God often leads us also through our circumstances, opening (and closing) doors that indicate which way we should go.
In addition, I've found it helpful to remember that God often leads us only one step at a time -- and no more. We want to know where we'll be in 10 years -- but all we really need to know is the next step. Trust Him to lead you in that next step, and leave the future in His hands.
The Bible says, "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it'" (Isaiah 30:21). Make sure of your commitment to Christ, and then trust Him to guide you. God loves you, and He is even more concerned about your future than you are.
