Million Mile Cars
Brenda Williams
There are few cars that reach the milestone of 1,000,000 miles. The
ones that do are often celebrated and end up in museums. For most car
owners, the bar isn't set so high. In fact, not too long ago, the
coveted mark was 100,000. Today, most cars only last 125,000 miles.
However, experts believe that this is due to poor maintenance and not
due to the inability of the car to last longer. These individuals
believe that cars should last at least 200,000 with little problem.
This is great news for millions of Americans who need to stretch the
life of their cars as long as possible. Below, are some tips to help
individuals get their cars to last as long as they possibly can.
1. Read the Owner's Manual: Many people fail to ever open up their owner's manual. This is a big mistake. The owner's manual is written by the manufacturer to help you prolong the life of your car. It should be read and followed. This will give you information on how to take care of your car and will provide you with guidance concerning when you should get scheduled maintenance.
2. Keep it Clean: Failing to keep your car clean will result in damage to it's exterior. Most people not only want their car to last, but for it to look as good as possible. Keeping your car clean is one way to accomplish this.
3. Don't Opt For Every Service: I know this may be counterintuitive, but it is true. You do not need very service that your car dealership suggests to you. Their job is to make money from you. Again, refer to the driver's manual. It will tell you what services you need and when you need to have them performed.
4. Keep the Oil Changed: Always get the oil changed on schedule. This will help you avoid doing damage to the engine.
5. Keep the Speed Down: Individuals that have racked up many miles on their cars often report that they were not road demons. Excessive speed over a long period of time will break down of your car more quickly. Therefore, remember to always drive the speed limit. This will also help you avoid wrecking and totaling your car.
6. Buy a Car with Manual Transmission: Cars with a manual transmission tend to last longer then automatic cars.
The average car lasts for only 125, 000. However, car experts believe that vehicle owners aren't getting the maximum usage out of their cars. This is typically due to poor maintenance or rough handling of the car. If an individual learns to take proper car of their vehicle, they will find that it should be able to reach 200,000 miles without a problem. Some ways to accomplish this include purchasing a car with a manual transmission, keeping the oil changed, keeping the speed down, not opting for every service, keeping one's car clean and reading and going by the owner's manual. Now I realize that everyone won't be able to follow every rule. For example, most people enjoy the ease of handling an automated transmission and would abhor purchasing a manual transmission. That is ok, just follow the rules that you can. You should still be able to see some significant improvement in how long your car lasts.
