Since there are now so many grocery stores on the Outer Banks of North
Carolina, it is no longer necessary to pack your food to take with
you. However, since we have been traveling down there for so many
years, it is sort of a tradition for us to pack a few boxes of food in
preparing for a trip down there.
Usually we end up packing the stuff we know is going to be favorites
for the kids and, therefore, will go fast and probably require
replenishing. Snack food is one example; you can't take enough snack
food to the beach if you have a few kids going with you. The stuff
seems to evaporate as soon as you crack open a bag or box of the junk
food.
Another example is cereal. When a kid comes back to the house after
being at the beach all day, that kid wants food ... lots of it and as
fast as possible. Cereal fits the bill big time. No need to wait
around for something to warm up or go through the "hassle" of making a
sandwich. Just fill up a heaping bowl of cereal, pour on way too much
milk, and dig in.
In preparation for the trip we got large boxes for packing food. We
kept the boxes in the dining room and slowly added to them every time
we went to the store. As we got closer to the planned trip, I began
to notice a pattern with the boxes of food. We seemed to be
collecting an awful lot of the type of foods that kids thrive on,
particularly cereal. I realized that the Jungle Boys (our 15 and 17
year old boys) would probably consume a lot of cereal while at the
beach, and that the Millionaire-Want-A-Be (our 25 year old son) would
be joining us and bringing a friend, but it seemed like we were
packing a lot more food than our little group could possibly eat.
I began to sense that I was out of the loop on some important
information about our trip ...
God Bless America.
Enjoy!
